The photo of myself on the Fortress Fungi homepage with that strikingly large Reishi specimen, was taken at the Equinox festival at Wasing Estate in Berkshire in September 2024. There was a stall being run by Bristol Fungarium, who had some great things to show off and talk about. I had a short conversation with the founder, Tom Baxter, and came away with a huge respect for what he has built.
Later that day I sat front row for a talk by Paul Stamets, the legendary American mycologist whose work has probably done more to bring mushrooms into mainstream consciousness than anyone alive. It was the kind of event that reminds you why the fungi world feels less like an industry and more like a warm, flourishing community.
After this trip away I decided to get some Reishi in the grow tent. Of all the mushrooms I've cultivated, Reishi is the slowest, the most demanding, and arguably the most rewarding. Watching those antler formations emerge from the substrate is something else entirely.
When I recommend a Reishi supplement it isn't based on a quick Google and a sponsored post. It's based on years of hands on experience with the mushroom itself.
Here's what I found.
What to Look For in a Reishi Supplement
Reishi, also known as Lingzhi, is a polypore fungus belonging to the genus Ganoderma, with a long history of use in East Asian medicine. Before we get into specific Reishi products, here are a few things to know in order to separate a worthwhile purchase from an expensive disappointment.
Fruiting body vs mycelium
Reishi's active compounds, triterpenes (ganoderic acids) and beta-glucans, are concentrated in the fruiting body. Many supplements use mycelium grown on grain instead, which can inflate polysaccharide readings on the label without delivering the same bioactive profile. It's a debated area. Paul Stamets himself defends mycelium based products, but whatever your view, the label should tell you clearly what you're getting. If it doesn't, that's reason enough to look elsewhere.
Dual extraction
This matters more for Reishi than almost any other medicinal mushroom as its two key compound classes do different jobs. Beta-glucans drive immune modulation and are water soluble, while ganoderic acids (triterpenes) deliver the calming adaptogenic effects and are alcohol soluble. A hot water only extract captures one without the other. You need both.
Declared triterpene content
A quality Reishi supplement will tell you its triterpene percentage on the label. If it doesn't mention triterpenes at all, that's a significant red flag.
How it's grown
Reishi traditionally grows on hardwood. The cultivation method of growing on hardwood logs is known as Duanwood. This process closely mirrors the natural environment and produces a richer compound profile than Reishi grown on grain or artificial substrate.
The Two I'd Recommend
1. Bristol Fungarium Organic Reishi Tincture — My Top Pick
I'll be honest, I hadn't personally tried the Bristol Fungarium tincture when I first wrote this review. I recommended it based on the credentials, my respect for what Tom has built, and the genuine quality of their operation. That's now changed.
I received it as a birthday gift and took 1ml around two hours before bed, not really expecting anything for at least a week. Within that time I started feeling genuinely meditative. A quiet, blissful calm that I hadn't been chasing but immediately recognised. I went to bed earlier than planned. I usually wake when my partner moves around or if I need the bathroom at some point in the night. I don't remember waking at all.
One night doesn't make a clinical trial, and it could have been any number of things, but the experience was notable enough to move this product to the top of my list. It's also worth understanding why a tincture might work faster than capsules. When taken sublingually (held under the tongue) tinctures absorb faster than capsules. Partly through the sublingual mucosa and partly because liquids don't require the digestion time a capsule needs to dissolve. The result is a notably faster onset... That means effects in minutes rather than the 30 to 90 minutes a capsule needs to dissolve and digest. The Time Health capsules I'd taken previously worked well but took consistent daily use over weeks before I noticed anything. This was different.
The founder of this company began as an organic farmer running a children's nature project on the outskirts of Bristol. In 2020 it was reborn as Bristol Fungarium, the first UK grown organic certified medicinal mushroom range to hit the market. Everything handled in-house, Soil Association certified, spore to bottle. Their Reishi tincture uses a proprietary triple extraction process at a 1:4 ratio from fruiting bodies they've grown themselves.
A 1-2ml daily in water or taken directly under the tongue is all you need. Earthy, slightly bitter and exactly what well extracted Reishi should taste like. It's a considered purchase but the quality more than justifies it in my opinion.

2. Time Health High Strength Reishi — Solid Alternative
This is what I took before the Bristol Fungarium tincture, and the results were real. A genuine sense of inner calm, a quieter baseline, better stress response after consistent daily use over several weeks. It just took longer to notice than the tincture format, which as explained above is largely down to how capsules absorb rather than the quality of the product itself.
The credentials are solid. Fruiting body only, full dual extraction using both alcohol and hot water, grown on hardwood logs without pesticides, and manufactured in-house in East Sussex to GMP standards. The label declares 50% polysaccharides, 30% beta-glucans and 1% triterpenes. That level of transparency is exactly what you want to see.
If you prefer capsules for convenience, travel, or simply not wanting to taste your supplements, Time Health is the best capsule option I've tried. Consistent quality, properly specified, and it works.

The Honest Caveat
Reishi works slowly and subtly for most people. It isn't lion's mane, you may not notice any changes within a week. Its effects accumulate over time: a quieter stress response, better sleep quality, a more resilient baseline. Give it consistent use before you decide whether it's working.
Consistency is everything. There's no point taking it for a fortnight and stopping. Let it build into a daily routine.
Final Verdict
Bristol Fungarium's Organic Reishi Tincture is my top recommendation. UK grown, triple extracted, Soil Association certified, and in my personal experience the most immediately noticeable Reishi product I've tried. Use code FORTRESS for 10% off.
If you prefer capsules, Time Health High Strength Reishi is the best option in that format. Properly specified, transparent labelling, consistent quality.
Either way, make sure whatever you buy is fruiting body only and dual extracted. If the label doesn't tell you that clearly, put it back.
